Appeals Court Temporarily Blocks Arizona 20-Week Abortion Ban | ThinkProgress

Just one day before it would go into effect, Arizona’s 20-week abortion ban has been temporarily blocked by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel. A trial judge upheld HB 2036 on Monday. The appellate court will hold a hearing on the ban as soon as possible this fall. Called the most extreme ban in the nation, the law measures the gestational age of a fetus from the first day of the woman’s last period, technically prohibiting abortions after 18 weeks of pregnancy. It would have forced doctors to withhold care until a pregnancy posed an immediate threat of death or major medical damage. It also contains no exceptions for fatal fetal birth defects, giving women no choice but to carry to term a fetus with no chance of survival.

Top Poster: Birth control is easily attainable and can be found at hospitals, clinics and even many retail stores. Rapists are prosecuted daily. And I don’t trust the government to teach kids personal issues that their parents should teach. The government should not take power away from parents to raise their children as they see fit.

Here’s a little explanation on why birth control may be easy to find, but not easy to stay on. Basically a person has to find the right kind of birth control to work with their body. It’s not like aspirin, you can’t just walk in, pick up any generic brand of the pill and expect it to work the same for everyone who takes it. I won’t even argue with you about rape convictions stats, I know you’ve already seen this, so I’ll just leave it here for anyone else to see why you’re full of shit. Your last point on poster 1 is more of an opinion, and sure, parents should definitely spend more time thoroughly educating their children about reproduction and sex, and sure, parents should be able to raise their children how they see fit (barring neglect and abuse obv) so what happens when parents refuse to teach their children about such “vulgar topics”? I mean, Michigan GOP House members can’t even handle the word ‘vagina,’ how are they going to explain one to a child? Then you’ve got a bunch of people who don’t know jack shit about sex going around having it (I know you can’t seriously fall for abstinence only education actually working). This is how accidental pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections happen, you know, the things you claim to want to stop? Yeah. Those things. What’s your alternative idea? Do you have any? Probably not.

I see, so we can’t infringe upon the right to life, but we can definitely infringe upon the right to your own body and protecting your own body. Definitely. See, once again, I can’t even bring myself to argue this point with you because I’m well aware that you actually do believe that consent to sex is consent to pregnancy, and that’s really not how it is at all. I doubt all the times you’ve fucked was with the intent of becoming a father. It’s interesting that because a person consents to sex you think it’s okay to remove rights from them while simultaneously whining about how the government isn’t supposed to take rights away from people. You’re very clearly voting against people’s rights when you’re voting to bar them from medical procedures that they’d like to have and forcing them to gestate against their will. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I doubt it.

Alright, Holzbach, you find an alternative place that fetuses can gestate and grow that isn’t someone’s body who doesn’t want it inside of them and you’ve got a deal. Yes, I have my own body and a right to that body, and a fetus has it’s own body (while feeding off of mine and having no recognized rights), what happens when I or anyone else don’t want that fetus’s body inside of my/their body any longer? What do you say to pregnant people who don’t want to gestate/birth? Too bad, you’re gonna do it anyway? Should’ve thought about that before you had sex, now you deal with the consequences? Either way, you’re denying them the right to control their own body, whether you agree with it or not. You’re allowing a fetus without rights to trump a fully grown person who actually has a set of rights. That’s how you’re voting to take away rights, because even if a fetus had a set of rights, those rights would be the same as everyone else’s and they would not include the right to someone else’s body, no matter how responsible that person is for the fetus actually being there. I mean, I could strike and injure a biker with my car, and even if the the biker needed to be hooked up to a human body to live any longer and no matter how responsible I am for the bikers life or death predicament, I am in no way obligated to hook this biker up to my body for 9-10 months to help them live.
